I have read an interesting article in INC magazine about “being good enough”. Precisely the authors describe that 20% of the effort is good enough for 80% of the people. While they made perfect sense in their articles and brought to light many examples. It got me thinking about our culture and the tendency of the current society to be mediocre. Think about it for a moment. We as a culture are becoming mediocre in what we do and who we are. And before all the nay Sayers jump on me for saying that, look around. From kids being taught that it’s not important to win, to banks providing bad loans because it’s not important to do the due diligence. Mediocrity is a disease, and we are accepting it without putting up a fight. A believe that a lot of it has to do with pride. When was the last time that you have worked with someone who was genuinely proud of what they have done and the work they do every day?
How many Realtors are realtors because it’s something to do, as opposed to something to be proud of? How many consider this just a job vs. a carrier. And this is just my profession, of which by the way I take tremendous pride in. I love the fact that I can find just the right home for my client, where they will be happy, raise their family, live a life. I take pride in marketing a home and helping my clients sell and move on with their lives. I’m sick and tired of hearing that Realtors are a shady profession, there are some of us who stand by their work and take responsibility for their action and believe it or not are very proud of what they do.
But I see day in and day out, so many examples of mediocrity that it truly makes me sad. How many construction companies do you know who take pride in their work. From my experience, maybe a handful. Take JAK construction for example, who are building a tremendous building in Edgewater now called Aventine. If you ever meet one of the owners and have them show you around you can see tremendous pride in their work, from the foundation all the way through the finishes. And its work well done. Other companies out there…not so much. How often do we see cut corners, crooked walls, and sloppy carpentry? Partly it’s because we accept mediocrity as standard, we let it slide, because we don’t remember the last time a job was really well done. Now this is close to home for me as a Realtor, I realize that, but what about in other fields. Are there car salesmen who are proud of what they do and do it well, who put client’s needs ahead of their own. What about customer service reps that….wait for it…are genuinely concerned for your satisfaction? Why are we used to tipping in restaurants where service is rubbish. Why is our wait staff expecting a tip for doing a bad job? We need the pride back. It must be taught at a young age and nurtured in our character. Whatever you do, do it well. If you are a waiter, do it with pride and be the best waiter there is. If you are a carpenter, a realtor, a doctor; whatever your profession put a little pride in it and take it up a notch and do it better. This will be the ripple effect that our society needs to move forward, to evolve into something genuinely better.
So here is my challenge to you: Do you know of anyone who is proud of the work they do and who do it exceptionally well? Let me know. Post it here in our comment section for other people to know as well. Let’s start to share good service and banish the bad. Let’s show appreciation when the people deserve it, so that they will continue to do things well and remain the shining beacon for the rest of us to change for the better and take pride in our work and do it better. What a wonderful world that would make…. So let’s hear it, who in any profession and category do you know who strives to be the very best in their profession and are proud of the work they do?
